Der 1975 geborene Aron Lee Ralston ist ein amerikanischer Bergsteiger, der sich im April 2003 während einer Wanderung im Blue John Canyon im US-Bundesstaat Utah den rechten Arm in einem Felsblock einklemmte. Die folgenden Tage war der junge Mann damit beschäftigt, seine Hand aus dem Felsbrocken zu befreien.

Doch letztendlich blieb sogar der Versuch mit einem selbstgebastelten Flaschenzug vergeblich. Nach fünf Tagen war Ralston unterkühlt, todmüde und nahezu ausgetrocknet. In seiner Not brach er sich Elle und Speiche des betroffenen Armes selbst, indem er das Körperteil längere Zeit massiv in eine bestimmte Richtung bog. Anschließend nahm er sein Taschenmesser und durchtrennte die Blutgefäße und die Weichteile.
